bulletFocus Surgery staff recently participated in the IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium, held in New York, NY, from October 28-31, 2007.  This conference primarily focuses on the sharing and discussion of research and development activities in the areas of ultrasonics in general, and to specific interest to Focus Surgery, to therapeutic ultrasound in particular.  Therapeutic ultrasound talks and posters from academia and industry focused this year mainly on on the following topics: therapeutic ultrasound applications in brain, molecular imaging, and therapeutic ultrasound interactions with drugs and gene therapy, all active topics of research.  Overall, approximately 1200 scientists participated and around 800 papers were presented.
bulletFocus Surgery staff recently participated in the CURC (Canadian Urology Research Consortium) and the CUOG (Canadian Urologic Oncology Group), held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, from October 12-14, 2007.  The purpose of this meeting was to have research and new drug topics discussed among the pharmaceutical companies and some well-established research oriented centers for urological applications.  These applications were BPH; cancer of the prostate, bladder, etc.  The special session on HIFU was organized by Dr. Laurence Klotz, University of Toronto.  Narendra Sanghvi, Focus Surgery, Inc., gave a presentation on "The Sonablate® HIFU: Past, Present and Future of Prostate Cancer Treatment," that included basic physics of HIFU.  He also explained how the Sonablate® 500 components - probe, transducer, SonachillTM, probe arm and software - have embedded these basic principles in their design.  Also briefly covered was the Sonablate® 500 worldwide locations, with an emphasis on where the main centers are located in Canada.  The other presentations included "Ablatherm by HIFU Technology: Different Engineering Strategies Resulting in Unique Clinical Device," by Dr. John Rewcastle.  This presentation was identical to the article published in Contemporary Urology, Vol. 19, No. 10, October, 2007.  However, it was with corrected slides on cavitation and concluded that both devices were undergoing similar FDA approved protocol and needed long term safety and efficacy data in North America.  Following this was clinical presentations given by urology doctors who emphasized the need for more clinical data and systematic documentations.  It was recognized that HIFU is a promising technology, but lacks long term clinical data and must be used with caution.
